Hip-Hop and Rap Music culture is often portrayed as a misogynistic boys club, where women are disposable, wealth is endless and children are, well….what children? Now true lovers of the art-form are well aware that this image is not always accurate, but most would agree that there is a need for more balance when it comes to the “face” of Hip-Hop. Now if you’ve been reading The LaVilla Project for the past two years and/or have had the pleasure of witnessing and participating in the “other side” of the culture, you know that there are a plethora of dope MC’s, producers, DJ’s, artists, writers etc…in Duval County, who are mothers, fathers, sisters and brothers, who care about their families, their communities and the preservation of the Hip-Hop culture. And if you didn’t know, well I have an event for you!
This Saturday, 07/30/11 at The Burro Bar in Downtown Jacksonville, the good folks of FFJB will be hosting, Cookie Monsters’ Day, an event designed to show that Hip-Hop loves the kids and to also give the community an opportunity to meet and network with the city’s artists, play old school neighborhood games and listen to DJ’s spin Hip-Hop, all while enjoying delicious home-baked cookies. The creator of the event, Tough Junkie stated that event is, “Not a show. The event is more so for people to hang around and meet each other and to show that Hip Hop cares about the kids.” There is also a raffle planned with prizes that include a 27 inch flat screen television, Oil Changes and Walmart Gift Cards. The event is slated to begin at 4:30 until dusk and then later that evening, there will be an “after-party” of sorts, also at The Burro Bar, where there will be performances by FFJB members including Stillwater, Sir Larry Otis and Tough Junkie, as well as a preview of Sir Larry Otis’s upcoming album The Southernist. This event is guaranteed to exemplify everything that is amazing about Duval and Hip-Hop and is a must attend by anyone who seeks an alternative to the norm.
